Virginia Senator Louise Lucas Arrested: FBI Corruption, Marijuana and Money Laundering Charges 2026
In a major breaking news from the USA today, October 22, 2026, Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas has been arrested by the FBI on federal corruption charges.
Louise Lucas, 82, President Pro Tempore of the Virginia Senate and one of the most powerful Democrats in Virginia politics since 1992, surrendered to federal authorities this morning. The U.S. Department of Justice and FBI Director Kash Patel announced the indictment in Washington.
According to the 45-page federal indictment, Lucas faces five federal counts including conspiracy to distribute marijuana, money laundering conspiracy, money laundering, and bribery. The case involves her licensed medical cannabis dispensary, The Cannabis Outlet in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Federal prosecutors allege that Lucas used her political power and her cannabis store to run an illegal marijuana distribution operation, collecting nearly $5 million in illegal proceeds over five years. The FBI says she paid $750,000 to acquire a shell company to help a business partner obtain a marijuana license, then accepted an undisclosed bribe in her Capitol office.
The arrest comes just 12 days before the 2026 US midterm elections, where control of the US Congress is at stake. President Donald Trump is holding rallies in Florida, while Democrats are fighting to keep Virginia blue.
Six other people were arrested with Lucas, including her two daughters and her great-grandson, all now in federal custody. The FBI raid started on May 6, when agents found drugs and firearms in her office.
Attorney General Todd Blanche said, "She put her own financial interests before the people of Virginia." Lucas is expected to appear in federal court in Norfolk, Virginia this afternoon.
This is the biggest political corruption case in Virginia in 20 years and is trending across America today.
